Category:

Centragard for Cats is a topical, spot-on, once-monthly treatment that prevents heartworm disease associated with Dirofilaria immitis, controls and treats roundworms (adult and fourth stage larvae of Toxocara cati), controls hookworms (adult and fourth stage larvae of Ancylostoma tubaeforme and adult Ancylostoma braziliense), and controls tapeworms (adult Dipylidium caninum and Echinococcus multilocularis).

Key Benefits:

  • The nerve and muscle cells of invertebrates are known to contain glutamate-gated chloride channels.
  • Eprinomectin binds to these channels.
  • It works to increase the permeability of the cell membrane to those chloride ions, which triggers nerve or muscle cells hyperpolarization, then paralysis of the parasite, and finally, death of the parasite.
  • Although Praziquantel has an unknown mode of action, tapeworms exposed to this medication are known to become paralyzed, then experience rapid tegument disruption and influx of calcium ion.Formulated For: For kittens and cats aged 8 weeks and older and weigh more than 1.8 lbs.

How is Medication Given? Recommended Dosage Rate:

  • Cats 1.8 to 5.5 Pounds: 0.3 mL Dose (24.9 mg Praziquantel and 1.2 mg Eprinomectin)
  • Cats 5.6 to 16.5 Pounds: 0.9 mL Dose (74.7 mg Praziquantel and 3.6 mg Eprinomectin)
  • Cats 16.6 to 22 Pounds: 0.3 mL + 0.9 mL Doses (99.6 mg Praziquantel and 4.8 mg Eprinomectin)
  • Cats 22.1 to 33 Pounds: 0.9 mL + 0.9 mL Doses (149.4 mg Praziquantel and 7.2 mg Eprinomectin)
  • Minimum recommended dosage rate is 0.055 mL per pound of body weight, which provides 4.55 mg of Praziquantel and 0.23 mg of Eprinomectin for every pound of body weight.
  • Full applicator contents should be topically applied monthly.
  • To use, pull the applicator plunger back slightly, then remove its cap.

FAQs

What parasites does Centragard protect against?

Centragard is also approved to treat and control three of the most common intestinal parasites of cats — hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms. It is the first, and only, product to protect against this spectrum of parasites in an easy-to-use transdermal formulation.

My cat only lives indoors. Is parasite protection necessary?

Even indoor cats are at risk of exposure to these parasites. According to the American Heartworm Society, 1 in 4 cats diagnosed with heartworm disease are indoor-only pets.

What is Heartworm Disease?

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease that can affect dogs, cats, and other animals. The risk of heartworms is widespread in the U.S. Heartworms are transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected with heartworm microfilariae while taking a blood meal from an infected dog, and then can transmit the heartworms to cats. Once in the cat, heartworm larvae develop in the cat’s tissues and then migrate to the bloodstream. They reach the blood vessels of the heart and lungs in a few months.
